BRENHAM, TX -- The No. 3-ranked Kilgore College Rangers battled with a tough Blinn College Buccaneer football team Nov. 4 to earn a 38-28 victory -- earning a Southwestern Junior College Football Conference Championship and a first-round playoff game at home next Saturday.
The conference championship for the Rangers this season is the 28th time in school history that KC football has claimed the conference title.
Blinn was playing the Rangers for pride, as they were already eliminated from post-season play with a 3-5 overall and 1-5 conference record coming into the contest.
The Buccaneers' record was a misnomer, though, because Blinn -- although young -- was stacked with athletes on both sides of the field.
Throughout the game, the Rangers (now 7-1, 6-1) tried their best to pull away from Blinn, but the Buccaneers kept themselves in the ballgame.
Kilgore's running game was strong with RB Kaden Meredith and Trae Epps -- and wide receiver Chris Marshall and tight end Joel Jameson made several impressive catches.
At halftime, KC led 24-14. The Rangers got the ball first in the second half and drove down the field, eventually scoring on a Cameron Peters 1-yard QB keeper that made it 31-14 at the 8:03 mark of the third period.
But the Buccaneers responded with a touchdown on the ensuing drive, then forced a Ranger punt.
On the next series, Buccaneers QB Rylan Wooten faked a handoff and ran for a 66-yard score, pulling Blinn within three points, 31-28.
But that was all of the scoring the Bucs would manage.
The Rangers closed out the scoring on a QB keeper by Cameron Peters at the 7:37 mark of the fourth quarter.
